“Most Wanted List” of Traffic Safety Improvements Released

Earlier in January, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its annual list of safety improvements the organization would like to see implemented. The 2016 Most Wanted List has been hailed as a “road map from lessons learned to lives saved.”

It details 10 sweeping safety improvements that the NTSB believes will reduce fatalities and injuries from vehicular accidents.

The renewed focus on implementing advanced safety initiatives is welcome news for families across the country, yet there is no guarantee that these safety initiatives will be implemented.

2016 Most Wanted List

The NTSB compiled the 2016 list after analyzing information from its car accident investigations. Among its recommendations is a more aggressive approach to preventing fatigue-related accidents. The NTSB calls for a “comprehensive approach focused on research, education and training, technologies, treatment of sleep disorders, hours-of-service regulations, and on- and off-duty scheduling policies and practices.”

The 2016 Most Wanted List also calls for an end to substance impairment in transportation. It points out that during the past 15 years, one-third of highway deaths involved a driver impaired by alcohol. The NTSB requests better compilation and analysis of data involving drivers impaired by drugs.

The NTSB would like to see an increase in technological improvements in new models of vehicles that can help protect the safety of drivers and passengers. Among its desired safety initiatives, the NTSB wants currently available collision avoidance technology to be standard equipment for all new vehicles.

These are just a few examples; the NTSB also calls for safety improvements in aviation and rail transport. The NTSB would like to see regulations passed that would require the implementation of Positive Train Control – a type of technology update that can prevent collisions and derailments.

The NTSB also calls for design improvements for tank cars, which may help prevent ruptures, along with improvements in rail transit safety oversight. Specifically, the NTSB points to recent investigations that have discovered that “oversight authorities of some rail transit systems lacked the ability to oversee safety and take corrective action quickly, despite warnings.”

Legal recourse for car accident victims

Despite these calls for improvements, far too many individuals become victims of traffic accidents each year. Any type of accident, including car, truck, and train accidents, can lead to serious injuries or death. Those who survive may face exorbitant medical bills, lost wages, loss of earning capacity, and property damage, just to name a few.

South Carolina law allows accident victims to demand compensation for these losses when negligence is a factor. By consulting a personal injury attorney, victims can explore the possibility of filing a claim against a negligent or reckless party.
