COLLETON CO., SC – Three people died, and eight more were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle accident on the interstate near Walterboro Sunday afternoon, reports WCSC Live 5.
Police say the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. on the southbound side of I-95, near mile marker 53 and the exit for Sniders Highway.
A preliminary investigation revealed that six vehicles somehow collided on the southbound side of the interstate. Two of the vehicles ignited in the median after the crash. Bystanders tried to save people trapped in one of the burning cars.
Three occupants from one of the vehicles died at the scene of the accident. Authorities have not yet released their names.
Medics airlifted an adolescent female to a trauma center and transported seven other people to a local hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement has not yet commented on the cause of the crash. A full investigation is underway with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
